Selecting model trains

Most railway modellers specialise in trains from a particular period or trains of particular type. A base plan is needed and the model trains, tracks and other accessories are ordered accordingly

Some of the different categories are:
1. Type of material being transported -  coal cars, lumber, or mixed freight.

2.Type of engines being used -  steam era, early or late, diesel early or late

3. Period  -  which will determine what detailing to buy. If you model the ’50s, you will need to only buy 1950’s automobiles and earlier, structures suitable to that time period

4. Area being modeled - modeling a country area, or city

Learning about Model Trains

Initially a beginner to model trains should start small. Depending on the space available, a small track can be built. Initially  a small model train layout can be made, and trains can be run to get an idea of how the trains work. Some times , people spend a lot of time trying to decide how the layout will be , without having any trains running and they may lose interest over a period of time.

If possible a beginner should join a modular train club nearby. Members of the club build small 2′ x 4′ sections to a certain standard, and then join them together into a huge layout and  public displays are assembled using these sections. By joining these clubs, a beginner can learn about railway track ballasting, small-scale detailing and weathering techniques, before moving on to a much bigger track layouts.

The Model RailRoader is a popular magazine with tips, ideas, layouts, plans for model trains and track layouts.
